This is part 3 in a series of home fitness routines that you can do without using any equipment at all! This is Part 4 in the series by Cari http://www.fitnesstrainingbyjon.com and Julieanna http://www.plantbaseddietitian.com. When I begin working with a client in their home, the first piece of equipment I tell them to buy is a Swiss ball or Stability Ball. The presence of the Swiss Ball is everywhere. We find them in large public gyms, private personal training studios, physical therapy offices, corporate board rooms, etc. There are many great benefits of making a stability ball Part of your fitness/exercise routine. It is great for your core, balance, stability and is fun! The stability ball is also versatile and adds some variety into your fitness and exercise routine.

What is the Best heartbeat to train, also best cardio for rugby?

March 8th, 2010

I have started using the gym cardio equipment to train with a heart monitor. I was wondering what is the most effective heart rate to burn fat and increase fitness. Secondly what is the best cardio equipment for rugby fitness, treadmill, Bike, sitdown bike, rower, crosstrainer? I live in a place where there isn’t room to train properly outside so the gym is my only option. Thanks for your advice.
I am a 27 year old male rugby player, around 87kg (194lbs), 5′11" tall

The latest word is that you do a minute or two of anaerobic training in the middle of an aerobic session. I don’t know whether there’s anything to it.

The Energy Efficient or Recovery Zone – 60% to 70%

Training within this zone develops basic endurance and aerobic capacity. All easy recovery running should be completed at a maximum of 70%. Another advantage to running in this zone is that while you are happily fat burning you may lose weight and you will be allowing your muscles to re-energise with glycogen, which has been expended during those faster paced work-outs. Check out the Fat burning zone page.

The Aerobic Zone – 70% to 80%
Training in this zone will develop your cardiovascular system. The body’s ability to transport oxygen to, and carbon dioxide away from, the working muscles can be developed and improved. As you become fitter and stronger from training in this zone it will be possible to run some of your long weekend runs at up to 75%, so getting the benefits of some fat burning and improved aerobic capacity.

The Anaerobic Zone – 80% to 90%
Training in this zone will develop your lactic acid system. In this zone your individual anaerobic threshold is found – sometimes referred to the point of deflection (POD). During these heart rates the amount of fat being utilised as the main source of energy is greatly reduced and glycogen stored in the muscle is predominantly used. One of the by-products of burning this glycogen, is the runners worst enemy, lactic acid. There is a point at which the body can no longer remove the lactic acid from the working muscles quickly enough. This happens at an individual heart rate for us all and is accompanied by a rapid rise in heart rate and a slowing of your running pace. This is your anaerobic threshold or POD. Through the correct training it is possible to delay the POD by being able to increase your ability to deal with the lactic acid for a longer period of time or by pushing the POD higher.

The Red Line Zone 90% to 100%
Training in this zone will only be possible for short periods of time. It effectively trains your fast twitch muscle fibres and helps to develop speed. This zone is reserved for interval running and only the very fit are able to train effectively within this zone.

To all triathletes and those interested in triathlons?

March 6th, 2010

Does a gym specializing in the exercise and coaching of triathletes seem appealing to you? The gym would have all standard weight training equipment as well as specialized equipment like endless pools, computrainers (cycle simulators), Vasa Ergometers, etc. It would also offer triathlon coaching, nutritional guidance, training plan creation, etc. for extra. As far was we know there is nothing like this and we want your input. Would you use something like this for around the price of a standard 24 hour fitness membership? Any feedback would be great.

I think something like this would be a really great idea, however you’d want to get local tri and running clubs on board. A lot of them have partnerships with competing facilities and you’d likely want their support before jumping into an endeavor of this magnitude.

There are a lot of possibilities with this. You could host indoor tris during the winter, sponsor local tris during the racing season, host educational seminars, invite the pros for a meet and greet…

You’d just have to market it the right way for ultimate success.

I’d definitely be interested. But the question is…do you have enough triathletes in your respective market to make it work. To break even how many active members would you have?

24 Hour Fitness vs. MMA The Octagon?

March 4th, 2010

I’m trying to get in good shape. Should I enter into a BJJ/Martial Arts/MMA school or go to 24 hr fitness. The Octagon in Dallas is ran under one of the best MMA fighters around (look it up). It also has training equipment, like weights, punching bags, personal trainers etc, but it is kinda pricey. 24 hr fitness is a little cheaper i think but some people say it is crowded. I want a place where they take things serious, not some aerobics crap. What do you think?

The MMA school sounds a lot more fun compared to the chain generic gym IMO. Additionally, you’ll be learning skills in addition to getting into shape at the MMA school. The extra price (if you can afford it) might be worth it.

Should trooping the colour and other military ceremonial parades be scrapped?

March 2nd, 2010

Then the thousands of man hours wasted could be spent on fitness training and weapon training. The money spent on No 1 uniforms and bearskin hats etc could be spent on body armour and better equipment. Agree or disagree?
Alan, I just read your reply about soldiers welcoming the chance of ceremonial duties. You were never in the Army mate!
LOOKS LIKE THATS A NO THEN.

David, If you were ever in the army you’d not need to ask.

Be British and PROUD!

How do you become fit quickly?

February 28th, 2010

I am really unfit and want to be fit for the holidays. How do I get fit quickly? I hate running. I would prefer to do something just around home if that is possible. I do not want to exercise with lots of other people and I don’t want to spend heaps of money on training equipment. I am very skinny and am not looking to lose weight just gain fitness. Fit enough to run 2 miles.
Any ideas???

Hula hooping! It’s great for pretty much everything. Do it in 2 minute bursts for 10 minutes with a one minute break in between. Do this both morning and afternoon or just twice a day. It will increase core fitness. However, the only way of becoming really good at running is by doing it. Hope this helps!

question about training of abs?

February 26th, 2010

Hello,

I would like to begin training my abs : Is there some fitness equipment you could recommend, also what is your opinion on those abs rollers : are they really harmfull for the back?

Thanks

"You could get six pack abs with NO cardio. To get leaner, what you
need is not cardio per se, what you need is a calorie deficit.

To get a six pack, you need very low body fat, so that means you
must stay consistently in a calorie deficit long enough to get rid
of even the very last bit of fat.

Cardio is simply a means to an end, the end being to create a
larger caloric deficit and to help you reach a time-bound goal
by a certain deadline date.

Fat loss through caloric restriction alone is working at 50% capacity.
I can easily double my weekly caloric deficit by using cardio. "
